Author: COLUTHUS

Biography:

COLUTHUS (5th century CE: OCD)

Coluthus (also Colluthus) was an epic poet from Lycopolis in Egypt whose verse in Greek was strongly influenced by his predecessor Nonnus. Although he is known to have written several other poems, his only surviving work is one in hexameters that describes the life and abduction of Helen. A copy of the poem was discovered in Italy and first printed at Venice in about 1505. William Beloe, the translator, has his own headnote. (OCD 25 June 2025; EB 25 June 2025) SR
