Author: Cole, Charles

Biography:

COLE, Charles (fl 1833-34)

The title pages of his books identify him as “a mechanic” but no public records that can be linked to him with certainty have been found. The two editions of Political and Other Poems and the edition of Poetical Address to His Grace the Duke of Wellington are bibliographically complicated by the mixed state of the BL copies. While the first edition of Poems has just 12 pages, the second has 144 and has been bound with Poetical Address (6 pages plus 4 pages of notes). Poetical Address was printed by “C. Cole, 10, Fleur-de-Lis Street, Norton Folgate.” This may have been the author. If so, a later sighting of him is from 1836 when he was recorded as being at the same address and involved with the Association of Working Men to Procure a Cheap and Honest Press.
