Biography:

COLE, Benjamin Thomas Halcott (1782-1850: ancestry.co.uk)

He was born on 9 Oct. 1782 and baptised at St. Peter Mancroft, Norwich, the eldest child of Benjamin Cole of Norwich and his wife Anne Hallcott (sic), who married on 18 Nov. 1781 at Broome. He was educated at Dedham Grammar School, Essex, then went up to Trinity College, Cambridge (matric. 1800, Scholar 1801) but migrated to Magdalene (BA 1803, MA 1807, Fellow and Proctor 1812). He was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn in 1803. Ordained in 1813, he became Rector of Warbleton, Sussex (1813-50).  He was also Headmaster of Maidstone Grammar School (1819-21) in Kent. He married Anne Jane Allen on 1 Jan. 1821 at All Saint’s, Maidstone. She died in June 1829. He then married Maria Grantham Foyster, on 9 Aug. 1838 at St. Clement’s, Hastings. There appears to have been no issue from either marriage and no children are mentioned in his will. He went to Bangor, North Wales, for the recovery of his health but died there on 1 Aug. 1850, aged 67. His wife survived him and died in 1860. His other works include Sixteen Sermons (1824), Winter Evenings (1829) on ancient Greek customs, and a translation of The Psalms of David (1847). (ancestry.co.uk 17 May 2022; findmypast.co.uk 17 May 2022; CCEd 17 May 2022 ; OJ 20 June 1829; Evening MailHampshire Advertiser, 18 Aug. 1838 and 7 Aug. 1850; GM Oct. 1850, 447) AA
