COFFING, Churchill (1813-73: ancestry.com)
Churchill Coffing was born on 13 Nov. 1813 in Salisbury CT, the son of Maria (Birch) and John Churchill Coffing. A graduate of Yale, he became a lawyer and established his practice in Peru ILL about 1839. There he married Asenath Brewster (1820-87), also from Salisbury, on 8 July 1841. They had a son and a daughter. Coffing published an oration on temperance in 1847 and became active in state politics, running as a Whig candidate for Congress in 1850 without success. At some time after 1866 he moved to Chicago and served as a judge on the Peoria circuit. He died at home in Chicago on 14 May 1873; his remains were removed to Salisbury for burial.
