Biography:

COFFIN, Alexander (1764-1836: ancestry.com)

Alexander Coffin Jr. was born (most probably in Nantucket MA) on 16 Nov. 1764, the son of Captain Alexander Coffin (1743-1839), a distinguished war veteran who served as mayor of Hudson NY, from 1821 to 1823. His mother was Eunice (Bunker) Coffin. He (the son) became a merchant and the captain of a merchant ship, The Penman. He was twice married and had ten children. From about 1793 the family home was in Hudson NY, where he was active in local affairs, opposed the slave trade, and held several public offices, such as member of the House of Assembly (1801) and Postmaster (1802). As an "agent of the New York State prison system" he issued the lists of names of prisoners discharged 1821-4. He died in New York City on 1 Feb. 1836.
