COBBY, John (1743-98: Music and Richardson)
A labourer, born in Brighton, who emigrated to New York and joined the Baptist congregation of John Stanford, in which he became a deacon. Though he had little formal education, he was the author of many hymns as well as of one volume of poetry. Stanford wrote an obituary of him for The Christian's Pocket Library. (David W.
