Biography:

CLARK, Willis Gaylord (1808-41: WBIS)

A major Philadelphia poet and editor, he was born in Otisco NY, son of Eliakim Clark and twin brother of Lewis Gaylord Clark, who became famous as editor of Knickerbocker Magazine. In Philadelphia he worked on various literary and religious publications before becoming the chief editor of Relf's Philadelphia Gazette. In 1836 he married Anne Poyntell Caldcleugh, niece of the original publisher, Samuel Relf. Both he and his wife died of tuberculosis. His brother edited his Literary Remains (1847). (DAB) HJ
