Biography:

CHRISTMAS, Joseph Stibbs (1803-30: WBIS)

Born in Georgetown PA to John and Elizabeth Christmas, he graduated from Washington College in Pennsylvania in 1819. He began medical studies, but in 1821 he was received into the Presbyterian Church and soon after that went to Princeton Theological Seminary. He became pastor of a new church in Montreal and spent four years there. In 1825 he married Louisa Jones; in 1828 they moved to New York City, he being in poor health. In 1829, after the deaths of his wife and children, he accepted a call to the Bowing Congregation in New York, but died within the year. He contributed to periodicals and published a number of tracts and pamphlets, some of them promoting temperance. Eleazor Lord wrote a Memoir (1831). (Sprague) HJ
