Biography:

CHIVERS, Thomas Holley (1809-58: WBIS)

The son of a plantation owner, he was born in Washington GA. After an early failed marriage, he took a medical degree at Transylvania University in Lexington KY in 1830; however, he seldom practised medicine, choosing to dedicate himself to literature instead. After a few years spent travelling in the US, he returned to Georgia and married Harriet Hunt of Springfield MA. He became a friend and champion of Edgar Allen Poe in New York, but his own reputation was damaged by charges and counter-charges of plagiarism after Poe's death. He died in Decatur GA, survived by his wife and ex-wife and four of their eight children. His biography of Poe was not published until 1952. (ANBO 8 Mar. 2018; Wikipedia 8 Mar. 2018)
