Author: Cheek, Elizabeth

Biography:

CHEEK, Elizabeth (1775-1831: ancestry.co.uk)

She was baptised 23 Apr. 1775, the daughter of the Rev. Nicholas Mosley Cheek, Perpetual Curate of St. Stephen’s, Salford, and Curate of Chorlton Chapel, and his wife Alice Gilbert Bannister (1752-1825), the daughter of Robert Bannister, who owned land and property in the eastern part of Parham, Antigua. (His will of 1765 left her a black servant.) The couple had fourteen children. Soon after his appointment in Salford, Nicholas Mosley Cheek published A Collection of Psalms and Hymns (1794) for use in the church. He died on 18 July 1805 and his wife on 14 Nov. 1825. Elizabeth Cheek died on 26 Sept. 1831, aged 56, at Newnham, Gloucestershire. Despite coming from such a large family, she appears to have had modest independent wealth and left various bequests of £250 to siblings when she died. MS notes in her Miscellaneous Poems [1801], published by subscription, identify her as the editor of the volume. Her eldest brother, John Mosley Gilbert Cheek, took 6 copies.
