CHATER, Thomas (1764-1811: ancestry.co.uk)

Almost certainly he was the Thomas Chater who was born in Daventry, Northamptonshire, on 11 Dec. 1764 to Thomas (b 1731) and Eleanor Chater. He was baptised in Daventry on 3 Jan. 1765. Little is known of his life but he was a dissenter who in 1783 sought to establish a chapel in Olney, Buckinghamshire; he was known to William Cowper who commented on the plans for a chapel in a letter to John Newton (qq.v.). On 29 Nov. 1790 he married Sarah Francis in Olney; it is not known if they had children. After her death he married Rebecca Andrew on 1 May 1802 at All Saints church, Northampton. The exact date of his death is not known but he was buried in Olney on 3 Feb. 1811.
