Biography:

CHAPMAN, William Henry (1791-1869: ancestry.co.uk)

He was born in Deptford, Kent, the son of Henry Chapman and his wife Elizabeth Tuney, and baptised at St. Paul’s, Deptford, on 9 Oct. 1791. Nothing is known of his schooling. He married Isabella Cunningham (c. 1781-1844) at St. James’s, Piccadilly, on 24 June 1812. They had two sons, Henry and Frederick, and a daughter, Mary. By 1819 when Chapman published the poem listed here, he was master of Sir William Boreman’s school for poor boys (the Green Coat School) in Greenwich. He retained that role at least until the date of the 1851 Census which shows him as a widower living with his son Henry and daughter Mary, and with twenty-five scholars in his care. He died in 1869 but the exact date is not known.  (ancestry.co.uk 13 Nov. 2023) SR
