Biography:

CHAPMAN, Jane, formerly KIRKLAND (1755-1835: findmypast.co.uk)

She was baptised on 5 Sept. 1755 at Ashby de la Zouch, the daughter of Dr. Thomas Kirkland (1722-1798), a physician, and his wife Dorothy Palmer (1722-1785), with whom he had twelve children, six of whom died in infancy. (He published a number of medical treatises and was awarded an MD by St. Andrews in 1769 on the recommendation of Erasmus Darwin.) Jane Kirkland married Thomas Fowler Chapman (1751-1823) on 25 Jan. 1776. They had at least eight children. Her Miscellaneous Poems (1802), with moving poems on the deaths of her children, is rare with the only copy in the Bodleian. She continued in this elegiac mode with Elegies on the Deaths of Several of her Valuable Friends (1805).  She died at Ashby de la Zouch on 10 October 1835.
