Biography:

CAWDELL, James (1749?-1800: ODNB)

Son of a cooper, John Caudel (sic), and his wife Mary (Bates) Caudel, a carrier's daughter. Against the wishes of his parents, he joined a touring company of actors--run by an uncle--of which he eventually became the manager. In 1782 he married Sarah Martin; they had five children, one of whom went to Canada as a soldier and published verse (q.v. James Martin Cawdell). The company was taken over by Stephen Kemble in 1799.
