Biography:

Cawdell, James Martin (1784-1842: DCB)

Cawdell was born in Sunderland, Durham, son of the actor, theatre manager, and writer James Cawdell (q.v.) and Sarah (Martin) Cawdell. After reluctantly studying law he purchased an ensigncy in the 100th Foot and joined his regiment in Montreal in 1810. A habit of lampooning his superiors alienated potential patrons, but he continued to write and published some newspaper verse under the pseudonym "Roseharp." After his resignation from the army was accepted in 1813, he taught school and tried various ventures without success. In 1823, however, he found a position as librarian of the Law Society of Upper Canada. (DCB 1 Mar. 2018)
