Author: Cartwright, William

Biography:

CARTWRIGHT, William (fl 1819-23)

He came from Spalding, Lincolnshire, and his 1823 Sketches, for the Improvement of Youth indicates that he ran a school there. However, the only man of this name in Spalding at this time whose records have been located was William Crane Cartwright, a solicitor. The rustic nature of the verses and acrostics in Fireside Sketches makes it improbable but still possible that he was the author. If so, he was the eldest of six children born to William Cartwright and his wife Ann Crane in Spalding on 21 June 1785 and was baptised at St. Mary and St. Nicolas, Spalding, on 5 July. He was apprenticed for five years to an attorney, Charles Martin of Spalding, on 17 Feb. 1804. He married Mary Parr in St. Mary and St. Nicolas church on 2 Aug. 1810. They had several children including Mary Ann (b 27 June 1812) and William Edward (baptised 23 Jan. 1814); Mary Ann and William are given as the names of William Cartwright’s children in Fireside Verses. He became bankrupt in 1816 but in 1828 he was made an attorney in the Court for the Relief of Insolvent Debtors in Lincolnshire. William Crane Cartwright died in 1833 and was buried in the churchyard at St. Mary and St. Nicolas on 19 Aug. 1833.
