Biography:

CARTER, St. Leger Landon (1785-1851: findmypast.com)

The son of Landon Thornton Carter (1751-1811) and his wife Elizabeth (1759-1840), he was born on 19 Dec. 1785 at the family estate, Cleve, in King George County, Virginia. On 6 Oct. 1808 he married Elizabeth Ludwell Lee (b 1787); the marriage appears to have been childless, and she predeceased him. Nothing is known of his education or occupation apart from the management of his estates, Cleve and Canning. In his will he left the bulk of his real and personal property to a nephew, but with the portion reserved he made generous provision for the eighteen named slaves who were to be freed upon his death, directing that they should “under no pretext whatever be removed to Liberia or any other place beyond the United States without their consent.” Besides The Land of Powhatan, he published a further collection of verse, Nugae, in 1844. He died at Cleve on 12 Dec. 1851 and was buried, by his own direction, at Canning beside his wife. (ancestry.com 22 May 2025; findmypast.com 22 May 2025) HJ
