Biography:

CARTER, Nathaniel Hazeltine (1787-1830: WBIS)

He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy and at Dartmouth College, which he graduated from in 1811. He taught school for a time (and published a Geographical Dictionary in 1813), studied law, and was briefly a Professor of Modern Languages at Dartmouth. He became an editor and proprietor of newspapers, first in Albany NY and then in New York City. In 1825 he travelled to Europe and in 1827 published an account of his journey in two volumes. In failing health, he sailed to Marseilles in 1829 and died there of consumption. (Duyckinck; Appleton) HJ
