Biography:

CARTER, John (b 1745: irishgenealogy.ie)

The Constant Couple is attributed to John Carter by ESTC; the music was composed by Charles Thomas Carter. If the two men were brothers, as seems probable, John Carter was born in Dublin to Timothy and Margaret Carter on about 17 Mar. 1745 and baptised at St. Mary’s church on 17 Apr. His elder brother, Charles Thomas, was born in Dublin in about 1735 and moved to London where he earned a living as an organist and composer. In 1787 he became the musical director of the Royalty Theatre in Wellclose Square where The Constant Couple was first performed. Nothing more is known about John Carter.
