Biography:

CARTER, Henry (1739-1813: ancestry.co.uk)

He was baptised on 10 Sept. 1739, the son of Rev. Nicholas Carter, DD, Perpetual Curate of Deal, Kent, and his second wife Mary Bean, who had married in 1729. Elizabeth Carter (q.v.), the eldest child of the first marriage, was his half-sister. With her father’s health failing, she supervised and funded Henry’s education—"perhaps the only instance of a student at Cambridge who was indebted for his previous education to one of the other sex” (Pennington). He went up to Corpus Christi, Cambridge (matric. 1756, BA 1760, MA 1763), and then entered the church. He was Rector of Little Wittenham, Berkshire, from 1764 to 1813. He married Ann Wilhelmina Benjamin on 11 Oct. 1765 at Deal, Kent. They went on to have at least ten children. The work listed here contains extracts from the letters and journals of his daughter, Mary Ann (or Anna Maria) Carter (1767-91); a short poem by Rev. William Palmer (1770-1853), who edited the work and later married her sister Elizabeth (1770-1801); and a long commemorative poem by her father together with a Latin memorial inscription which he probably also wrote (Selections, 35, 36-52, 53). He died as the last surviving child of Nicholas Carter on 27 Feb. 1813 at Lyme Regis, aged 75. (ancestry.co.uk 30 May 2022; CCEd 30 May 2022; “Carter, Elizabeth,” ODNB 30 May 2022; Montagu Pennington, ed., Memoirs of the Life of Mrs Elizabeth Carter, [1808], 1: 157-9; Reading Mercury 28 Nov. 1791, 3 Nov. 1794; OUCH 13 March 1813) AA
