Biography:
CARSTAIRS, Christian (fl 1763-86)
There is little certain biographical information. She is said to have been the daughter of James Bruce Carstairs (or Carstairs Bruce) of Kinross, and some of the poems in Original Poems are dated from 1763-76 at Kinross House. No positive identification of her father has been located, but Kinross House was owned by James Carstairs Bruce until 1777. Original Poems is dedicated to Ann Henderson, daughter of Sir John and Lady Henderson of Fordel, Otterston (Fife), and some of the poems are dated at Otterston, others at Burntisland Castle. The source of the claim that she was a governess is James Maidment who reissued her The Hubbleshue in an edition of 30 copies in 1833. (RPW; ECWP)
