Author: Carpenter, William

Biography:

CARPENTER, William (1721-c. 1810: Hollis)

A broadside by him, A Poem on the Execution of William Shaw (1771), appears to be an eye-witness account of a hanging in Salem. His 1796 Poetical Paraphrase is dated from Stafford CT. These details match the William Carpenter who was born in MA, died in CT but was buried in MA, and who may have been a soldier during the Revolutionary War and a delegate to the State Legislature of MA afterwards. If so, he married Hannah Needham in 1743; the couple had ten children. (ancestry.com 23 Feb. 2018) HJ
