Biography:

CARNALL, Robert (1791-1844: findmypast.co.uk)

He was baptised on 4 Mar. 1791 at St. Mary, Rotherhithe, the son of William Carnall and Emma Simpson, who had married at St. Martin-in-the-Fields in 1788. He went to school in Greenwich, then went to sea, before becoming a schoolmaster in Shipborne and later Seal, in Kent. Leisure Hours (1822) lists his siblings Elizabeth, Henry, and William as subscribers as well as members of his mother’s family in Kent. His Anthology; with Dictates (1839) is dedicated to his aunt Eliza Charlotte Broughton (1783-1843) of New South Wales, who was his mother’s sister-in-law. He died from "intemperance [with] delirium tremens" on 30 Apr. 1844 at 25 Bridport Place, New North Road, Hoxton Old Town. He had been living with his unmarried sister Elizabeth Carnall (1797-1861), to whom he left his small estate. (The GRO age-at-death transcription of 58 is a misreading of 53.)
