Biography:

CAREY, William Paulet (1759-1839: ODNB)

pseudonyms Scriblerus Murtough O'PINDAR, Junius HIBERNICUS

Born in Dublin, son of Christopher and Mary (Sheridan) Carey, and brother of James Carey and Mathew Carey (qq.v). He became an engraver and made prints for journals. He was a member of the Society of United Irishmen. In 1789, the title-page of one of his satirical poems describes him as the "Printer and Proprietor of the General Evening Post". In 1788 in Dublin he married for the first time; his wife's first name was Dorothy. They had one daughter before Dorothy's death in 1791. In 1792 he married Elizabeth Lennon; they had four children including Elizabeth Sheridan Carey (q.v.). In 1793 for policitical reasons he moved to Philadelphia, where his brother Mathew had a publishing business, but by the late 1790s he was living in London and had begun his career as an art dealer and a vocal and influential art critic. He wrote prolifically, was a supporter of Queen Caroline, and championed the work of William Blake and other artists whom he considered to be underestimated. In Aug. 1837 he made a final trip to Philadelphia, sailing from Liverpool. He returned to England in 1838 in poor health and moved to Birmingham where he died on 11 Apr. 1839. His daughter published an account of the final years of his life in 1841. (ODNB 17 Feb. 2018; ancestry.co.uk 18 Oct. 2023; Sheffield Iris 27 Apr. 1841) SR
