CALDER, William (c. 1805-44)
The 1841 Census lists him as a bookbinder living in West Adam Street, Edinburgh, with his wife, Mary. He was born on 17 July 1805 in Midlothian and was the son of William Calder and Elizabeth (Brown) Calder; he was baptised on 2 Aug. in St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh. His Poems Moral and Miscellaneous with a few songs, by a Journeyman Mechanic was published in 1838; in the preface he states that many of the poems had previously been published in periodicals. The 1841 Census shows him living with his wife, Mary, in West Adam Street. At the time of his death on 24 Jan. 1844 from a sudden infection, he was preparing another book for publication.
