CAIRNS, James (fl 1832)

No positive identification of this author has been possible. His book is dedicated to Sir David Erskine of Dryburgh Abbey (q.v.). It includes a learned essay on the origins of Scottish poetry with biographical accounts of Andrew Scott and Robert Davidson (qq.v.). He may have been the James Cairns who is listed in the 1851 Census as a farm steward in Roxburghshire; if so, he was born in 1788 in Whitton, Roxburghshire. In 1851 he was living with a wife, Janet, a daughter, and a granddaughter. (ancestry.co.uk 5 Feb. 2025) SR
