BUTT, George (1791-1863: ancestry.co.uk)
The fourth son of John Butt and his wife Martha Harding, he was born on 25 Mar. and baptised in Salisbury on 28 Apr. 1791. He was admitted to the Inner Temple on 21 Dec. 1820 but he does not seem to have been called. Butt was a widower living in Bristol and working as a solicitor when he married Mary Augusta Le Chevalier on 26 Oct. 1839. No record of an earlier marriage has been located. They had six daughters and two sons. In the 1851 Census his occupation is given as “solicitor’s managing clerk” and the family was living in Park Lane, Chelsea, London. The 1861 Census has them living in Dover, Kent. Butt's sudden death on 12 Apr. 1863 at home on Snargate Street, Dover, was the subject of a coroner's inquiry which determined that he had died from a cardiac arrest. His other publications are The Poll of the Freeholders of the County of Wilts, for Electing a Knight of the Shire (1819 and Suggestions as to the Conduct and Management of a County Contested Election (1826).
