Author: Butler, Ann

Biography:

BUTLER, Ann, formerly BURGIS (1780-1844: ancestry.co.uk)

She was baptised on 23 Apr. 1780 at Benson, Oxfordshire, the third of four children and only daughter of James and Ann Burgis. It is not known where or when or whether her parents married, and if they did, it would appear to have been out of county. She married Edward Butler on 1 Sept. 1803 at St. Helen’s, Benson. They went on to have six children who were baptised at Wallingford Independent (Congregational) 1804-15. Her husband died in 1816 and was buried at Benson on 2 Sept. He would seem to have been a linen and woollen draper, a business she continued after his death (probably with her sons), but retired from in 1825. She died on 4 Mar. 1844 at her son’s residence at St. Mary Butts, Reading, and was buried at St. Helen’s, Benson, on 12 Mar. Her identification comes from the subscribers’ list to Fragments (1825) corroborated by OFHS records. (ancestry.co.uk 25 Jul. 2022; findmypast.co.uk 25 Jul. 2022; OJ 22 Jan. 1825; Reading Mercury 9 Mar. 1844; Alan Simpson, OFHS, 28 July 2022) AA
