Biography:

BUSTARD, John (1783-1868: ancestry.co.uk)

He was baptised in St. Peter’s Cathedral, Sheffield, on 26 Dec. 1783. His parents, John Bustard and Ann Fuller, were married on 16 Apr. 1781 in Newark-upon-Trent, Nottinghamshire; John was their eldest child. No details about his education are known but he became a Wesleyan preacher and settled in various communities in Kent and Somerset. He married Hannah Cavey of Ipswich, Suffolk, in Tenterden, Kent, on 28 Apr. 1814. Their one child, Mary Anne, was born in Ipswich on 28 Mar. 1816 but she died in Aug. 1820. Bustard wrote a memoir of her: The Thoughtful Child: A Memoir of Mary Ann Bustard (1828) which went to several editions and was translated into French (1836). He wrote other Christian biographies, including A Memoir of Miss Mary Helen Bingham (1827), Memoir of Mr. John Bingham, Jun. (1832), The Young Miner: A Memoir of Jean Lean, Jun., of Camborne (1838), and Mildred, The Thanet Sunday School Teacher (1838). He prepared an abridged edition of Thomas Pierce’s The Sinner Impleaded in His Own Court and added an account of the author.  The 1851 Census shows him living with Hannah and her niece in Henstridge, Somerset. Hannah died in Dec. 1860. John Bustard died in Yeovil, Somerset, (not Sherborne, Dorset, as given by Woolcock) on 14 Jan. 1868, leaving effects of under £600. Woolcock states that he wrote Kent Sunday School Hymns but no copy of this book has been found. (ancestry.co.uk 6 Aug. 2023; S. Woolcock, The Poets of Methodism [1875]; J.
