Biography:
BURTT, John (1789-1866: WBIS)
Born in Riccarton, Ayrshire. He was apprenticed to a weaver but at the age of 16 was seized by a press gang and forced into the Royal Navy. It was as a sailor that he began to write poetry. On his escape after five years, he opened a school in Kilmarnock and later attended medical lectures at Glasgow University for a year. In 1817 he emigrated to the US; in 1822 he entered Princeton Theological Seminary. He was ordained in 1824. He preached in Salem (1824-30) and in Cincinnati (1835-42), and was Pastor in Blackwoodtown NJ (1842-59). He also contributed to church journalism. He and his wife Mary had three children.
