Biography:

BURTON, Margaret, formerly DUNN (1785-1830: findmypast.co.uk)

She was born on 12 Jan. 1785 and baptised at St. Nicholas, Durham, on 8 Mar., the daughter of William Dunn, an ironmonger, and his wife Mary (Armstrong?). Her father died in 1789 and her mother started a dress-making business. They moved to North Shields and later to Darlington. She converted to Methodism in 1802 and wrote a religious diary from 1805 until her death. She married Robert Burton on 26 Apr. 1809 at St. Cuthbert’s, Darlington, and they went on to have at least three daughters and a son. The subscribers’ list to Poetical Effusions (1816) contains various family members who reappear as correspondents in Life and Correspondence (1832). She died on 19 Jan. 1830, with a long eulogy appearing in the Durham Chronicle extolling her virtues and noting her literary powers. Her husband died in 1836. (M. Burton, Life and Correspondence, ed.
