Biography:

BURTON, Harriet Emma (fl 1833-45)

The White Rose Wreath (1833) is dedicated by permission to Queen Adelaide. A favourable review in the Windsor and Eton Express states that some of the poems had previously been published anonymously in the Express. An 1837 account of a gift of plate to her from Queen Adelaide, then newly widowed, identifies Burton as the sister of a Captain Burton of the Royal Marines. However, without a first name it has proven impossible to identify him and no certain biographical details about Harriet have been located. Her second book, Lindah: Or, The Festival (1845), is also dedicated to Queen Adelaide and the preface gives Burton’s address as Windsor castle. This suggests that she and her family may have come under the queen’s protection. The 1841 Census shows a Harriet Burton, age 30, living with her mother Harriet and five sisters in the lower ward of Windsor castle: likely this was her. (ancestry.co.uk 14 Aug. 2023) SR
