Author: Burt, Adam
Biography:
BURT, Adam (fl 1822-33)
The only reliable information about him comes from his publications, the first volume of poems being published in South Carolina and the others in New York City. He uses Scots; he refers to himself as an "emigrant" who had worked as a barkeeper in a hotel on Sullivan's Island in South Carolina in 1821; some poems are about the hard lot of weavers, so perhaps he was one of them. The US Federal census of 1850 records an Adam Burt, 60 years old, born in Scotland, living in New York, occupation "none": if he is the same man, he lived at least 1790-1850.
