Biography:
BURGESS, George (1809-66: WBIS)
Born in Providence RI to Thomas and Mary (Mackie) Burgess, he graduated from Brown in 1826. He studied law in his father's office, tutored at Brown, and, after travelling for three years to study at German universities, was ordained in 1834 and made Rector of Christ Church in Hartford CT. He married Sophia Kip in 1846. In 1847 he became the first Bishop of Maine. He died on the return voyage from Haiti where he had gone partly for his health and partly to examine the mission stations at first hand. His publications were mainly sermons and discourses related to his profession, but some longer poems appeared in the 1840s and his collected poems were published posthumously in 1868. (DAB) HJ
