Biography:

BURDER, George (1752-1832: ODNB)

Nonconformist minister, son of a deacon of the Fetter Lane Chapel in London. At first a field preacher, he was ordained in Lancaster in 1778 and after some years as an itinerant minister settled in Coventry, where he published his Collection of Hymns as a respectful supplement to Isaac Watts. (It had reached its 37th edition by 1840.) He became widely known for his Village Sermons (4 vols. 1800), which were frequently reprinted in various forms. In 1781, he married Sarah Harrison; they had nine children, two of whom became Congregationalist ministers and one--Sophia Maria Burder, q.v.--a poet. He was active in the Sunday School movement and the London Missionary Society, and was one of the founders of the Religious Tract Society. In 1803, he returned to London as the minister of the Chapel where his father had been a deacon. He was the editor of the Evangelical Magazine from 1803 to 1826. (ODNB 5 Jan. 2018; Benson) HJ
