Biography:
BULLOCK, Henry (1809-47: ancestry.co.uk)
Octavius: A Tragic Drama (1834) is his only known publication but the play does not seem to have been taken up by any of the theatres. A second edition was printed in Wigan in 1847, the year of his death. His parents were Henry Bullock (d 1837), owner of a cotton spinning factory and mayor of Wigan, and his wife Elizabeth Heaton (d 1834); they had married in Wigan on 29 Jan. 1801. Henry and his twin brother George (d before 1812) were born on 31 Oct. 1809 and baptised in St. Paul’s chapel, Standishgate, Wigan, on 31 Dec. 1809. Nothing is known about his education but he succeeded his father as manager of the cotton spinning works. The 1841 Census shows him living in the family home at 110 Queen Street, Wigan, with a sister, Rachael, and a brother, Alexander. He died on 26 Aug. 1847 and was buried in All Saints churchyard, Wigan, on 31 Aug. 1847. Death notices describe him not as a manufacturer but as “author of the tragedy Octavius.” (ancestry.co.uk 25 July 2023; findmypast.co.uk 25 July 2023; Lancaster Gazette 7 Oct. 1820; Manchester Examiner 31 Aug. 1847) SR
