Biography:

BULLFINCH, Stephen Greenleaf (1809-70: WBIS)

Born in Boston, the son of the architect Charles Bulfinch; educated at The Columbian College in Washington DC and at Harvard Divinity School. He was ordained in 1831. From 1830 to 1837 he served as a Unitarian minister in Georgia (where he married Maria Howard in 1836), and thereafter as schoolteacher and preacher in Pittsburgh and Washington. In 1845 he settled in Nashua NH but in 1852 returned to Boston. He continued to be active as a writer and editor, publishing treatises, sermons, poetry, and even fiction (Honor: or The Slave-Dealer's Daughter, 1864). His major contribution was as a Unitarian hymn-writer and collector of hymns, notably with The Harp and the Cross (1857). (Appleton; ancestry.com 4 Jan. 2018) HJ
