Biography:

BRYANT, William Cullen (1794-1878: ANBO)

Born in Cummington MA, the son of Peter and Sarah (Snell) Bryant, he was a published poet at the age of 13. He attended Williams College for a year and then studied law, being admitted to the bar in 1815. He remained in practice for ten years, continuing to publish verse in newspapers and periodicals, with occasional collections in volumes. In 1821, he married Frances Fairchild; they had two children. In 1827, he gave up the practice of law and moved to New York, where he took up a position on the editorial staff of the New York Evening Post. In 1829 he became the editor-in-chief--a position of great influence that slowed down but did not end his literary work. In later life he published both original poetry and translations, notably two volumes of Homer (1871, 1873). (ANBO 30 Dec. 2017) HJ
