Author: Bruce, George

Biography:

BRUCE, George (fl 1793-1847: “Profiles of the Past”)

He was a very successful miniature painter at Edinburgh. He was Samuel Houghton’s pupil and partner; after Houghton’s death, he married his widow, Agnes (Caichen) in 1797. His poems are in dialect; the 1813 volume is dedicated to the Marquis of Huntly and has a lengthy list of subscribers. This book is published by Oliver and Boyd who also printed his trade labels. He seems unlikely to be the same George Bruce (q.v.) identified as the author of Patie and Nelly (1820). (“Profiles of the Past” online at silhouettes.adaptivetechnologies.com 25 Apr. 2018) SR
