BRUCE, David (1760-1830: ancestry.com)
Born in Thurso, Scotland, the son of David and Isabella (Sinclair) Bruce, he arrived in Maryland in 1784--either from Scotland directly or from Scotland by way of Ireland. He eventually settled in 1795 in Burgettstown PA, where he kept a store and became a significant landowner. He appears to have remained unmarried. Before they were collected in a volume, most of his verses appeared in a local newspaper under the nom de plume of "The Scots-Irishman." Some biographical accounts of him are based largely on inference from the poems, but Ancestry includes newspaper notices and other records.
