Author: Brown, Robert

Biography:

BROWN, Robert (fl 1795-97)

He was a corporal in the Coldstream Guards (that is, a foot soldier) and saw action in the campaign in the Low Countries against the French revolutionary army. His other books remain important in military history and are An Impartial Journal of a Detachment from the Brigade of Foot Guards (London, 1795) and Description of a Battle (Glasgow, 1797). He was evidently highly literate but it has been impossible to find out more about him. He was not the Robert Brown who deserted from the Coldstream Guards and was convicted and sentenced to death in Edinburgh in Nov. 1802 for his part in robbing a mail coach. That Robert Brown joined the Coldstream Guards only on 2 June 1801. (ancestry.co.uk 8 Sept. 2023; Kentish Weekly Post 19 Nov. 1802) SR
