Biography:

BROWN, Louisa (1780?-1840?: ancestry.co.uk)

Heathen Mythology presents a dialogue between two girls, Eliza and Mary; includes illustrations; and was prepared for the author by the London printer John Bailey. Likely the book met with success because three years later her second book for children, Historical Questions, was published by the well-established firm of Darton, Harvey, and Darton, known for its children’s books. It went to a second edition in 1815 and was also published in Boston MA in about 1823. The dedication to Miss Elizabeth Edgar, the author’s pupil, is dated from 9 Brighton Place, New Kent Road, London. It is possible that the author was Louisa Brown, daughter of Richard and Margaret Brown, who was born on 15 June 1780 and baptised at St. Stephen’s, Walbrook, on 25 Sept. 1780. Her parents are identified as being of the parish of St. Benet Sherehog, a medieval church near St. Stephen’s. Louisa Brown was buried at St. Stephen’s on 18 Mar. 1840; the officiating clergyman was George Croly (q.v.). (ancestry.co.uk 8 Sept. 2023)
