Biography:

BROWN, Hugh Horatio (c. 1800-66: ancestry.co.uk)

He was the eldest of several children of Robert Dunmore Craufurd Brown (q.v.) and his wife Elizabeth Ker, daughter of Lord Bellenden. He was born on 29 Mar. 1795 and baptised at Penicuik, Midlothian, Scotland, on 8 Apr. He became an advocate and justice of the peace. His father died in Dec. 1832 and as the eldest son he inherited Newhall, Carlops, Peebleshire, and was designated “of Newhall.” On 12 Apr. 1853 at St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, he married Gulielmina Ranaldson Macdonell; they had two sons, Horatio (b 1854) and Allan (b 1856). He died on 17 Oct. 1866 at Newhall. His son Horatio inherited Newhall, became a writer, and lived and died in Venice. (ancestry.co.uk 29 Apr. 2019, 30 May 2025; Burke) SR
