Biography:

BROOKS, James Gordon (1801-41: WBIS)

Son of David Brooks, an officer of the Revolution and later a Member of Congress, he graduated from Union College in 1818, studied law but never applied for admission to the bar. He moved to New York City, where he worked as a literary editor and writer for various journals before becoming an editor of the Morning Courier. He contributed verse to periodicals using the pseudonym "Florio." In 1828, he married Mary Elizabeth Aiken (q.v., Mary Elizabeth Brooks), whose pseudonym was "Norma." The Rivals of Este, and Other Poems (1829) was a collaborative venture. In 1830 they moved to Winchester VA where he was editor of the Republican, but returned to New York in 1838 (Albany and then New York City) to work on  other journals. (DAB) HJ
