Biography:

BROMBY, George (b 1779: ancestry.co.uk)

His father, John Bromby (1745-91), was a linen draper in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire. His mother was Isabella Mallison (1749-1809); she had married John Bromby in St. Mary’s, Hull, on 17 Sept. 1769.  George Bromby was baptised in Hull on 30 Sept. 1779. One of his elder brothers was the Rev. John Healey Bromby (1770-1868); he, with other of Bromby’s siblings, was a subscriber to La Melange. George Bromby is identified as a stationer in the baptismal record of his daughter Frederica on 18 Nov. 1819 in St. Peter’s of Mancroft, Norwich, Norfolk. His wife’s first names were Mary Ann but no record of their marriage has been located. Frederica died as an infant and was buried at St. Peter’s on 18 Mar. 1821. No other records have been found for George Bromby but his poem, “Milton’s Blindness,” was printed in the Morning Post on 10 Nov. 1826 and in The Amulet in 1827. La Melange has a curious preface which states that some of the verses had previously been published in periodicals as by an actor friend with a similar name. This refers to George Percival Bromley who published a play, The Rebellion, or, Norwich in 1549, in 1815; some of Bromby’s siblings were subscribers to Bromley's book. Both Bromby and Bromley published verse in La Belle Assemblée and were associated with the Theatre Royal in Norwich. The book is dedicated to Elizabeth Cobbold (q.v.) who was a subscriber.
