Biography:

BRITTON, Frances (fl 1829)

No biographical information has been located and her name is too common to allow for a confident identification among the many possibilities. Her book is unique: the preface states that in Nov. 1827 she was arrested under the vagrancy act for begging. She wrote to the Lord Mayor of London (Mathias Prime Lucas in 1827) requesting help which he granted. She had therefore been able to publish her book of verse, hoping that the proceeds would contribute to her support. Her letter to the mayor is included; part of it is a poem from which we learn that she was sentenced to hard labour.
