BRITTAN, Thomas S. (1790-1858: ancestry.com)
Thomas Standfast Brittan (or Brittain), son of Meshach Brittan and his wife Sarah Wilks Standfast, was born on 22 Feb. 1790 and baptised at St. James's, Bristol, Gloucestershire, on 18 May. He married Mercy Bourne at Westbury, Wiltshire, on 10 Jan. 1816, and they had at least four children born in England or Wales before they emigrated to America in 1832. They were dissenters, who registered their daughter Mercy (b 1817) at Dr. Williams's Library in 1820. Brittan was a well-known preacher in New York City. All his books were published there. He wrote fiction and poetry for children as well as sermons and works on church doctrine. He died in Brooklyn on 27 Aug. 1858 and was buried in Greenwood cemetery.
