BRICE, Thomas (1749-1839?: ancestry.co.uk)
He was the great-nephew of Andrew Brice (q.v.), and, like him, an Exeter printer and satiric writer. His mother’s name is not known but his father was Thomas Brice (d 1758) who was a printer in Exeter operating from Southgate Street in 1755 before he moved to Eastgate Street in 1756. Thomas Brice, the son, was baptised at Saint Stephen’s, Exeter, Devon, on 10 Apr. 1749. He married Elizabeth Penny on 13 Dec. 1768; it is not known if they had children. Her father was James Penny, an Exeter bookseller and printer with premises in Southgate Street. Thomas Brice took over his father’s business in Eastgate Street but later moved successively to Goldsmith Street, Conduit Street, North Street, and High Street. He established Brice and Company’s Old Exeter Journal; or, Western Advertiser (1789-91). He was likely the Thomas Brice who died in Exeter in 1839 but the exact date is not known. He wrote The History and Description, Ancient and Modern, of the City of Exeter (1802). (ancestry.co.uk 18 Sept. 2023; British Book Trade Index 18 Sept. 2023; ESTC)
