Author: Brashears, Noah

Biography:

BRASHEARS, Noah (1795-c. 1832)

A schoolmaster in Washington DC, and eventually, according to a title-page (1826), Principal of the Eastern Academy there. According to an introduction by his publisher in Columbia's Wreath (1830), he was a native of Maryland and had begun his teaching career there in 1821. The introduction gives his age at that time as about 35, hints darkly at "indiscretions" and misfortunes, but affirms his goodness of heart. Public records flesh out the biography only a little. No birth or death announcement has been found and he does not appear to have married. His parents were probably Jeremiah Pottinger and Margaret (Soper) Brashears, and his place of birth Prince Edward County, Maryland. After moving to Washington he was twice incarcerated for debt, 1822 and 1828. His name appears on a list of names in the dead-letter office in 1833.
