Biography:

BRAINARD, John Gardiner Calkins (1796-1828: WBIS)

He was born in New London CT, son of Sarah (Gardiner) Brainard and Jeremiah G. Brainard, a judge of the Connecticut Superior Court. He graduated from Yale in 1815, studied law and was admitted to the bar, but retired from practice soon after and was employed as writer and editor by the Connecticut Mirror. He died of consumption (tuberculosis). His Literary Remains contains biographical material. (DAB) HJ
