Biography:
BRAINARD, John Gardiner Calkins (1796-1828: ancestry.com)
He was born in New London CT, the son of Sarah (Gardiner) Brainard and Jeremiah G. Brainard, a judge of the Connecticut Superior Court. He graduated from Yale in 1815, studied law and was admitted to the bar, but retired from practice soon after and was employed as writer and editor by the Connecticut Mirror. He died of consumption (tuberculosis) in New London after what the death notice described as "a lingering illness" on 26 Sept. 1828 and was buried at the Cedar Grove cemetery there.
